London Day 5

London Day 5 - Well, we were going to lay low today - and we did for the most part - but we decided to go to Hyde Park where the Speaker's Corner is. In 1872, a law made it legal for one to assemble an audience and address them on whatever topic you chose. Since then people have been gathering here on Sundays to speak about everything from their plans for world peace/domination to being saved by Jesus. Today, there was ALOT of anti-American rhetoric due to the war in Iraq. I felt like if anyone figured out that we were American, we might get mobbed. The speakers stand on anything from stools, to crates, to ladders and they usually are getting heckled by the onlookers. It was pretty interesting; I'm glad we went. There were at least 10 different speakers at the same time, spread out in this area of the park. Most of the speakers look a little crazy/homeless; but at the same time, many of them are well spoken and educated on their topics. The last guy that we watched was alot of fun. He was an old jewish guy with his shirt half tucked and he was dirty looking. I'm not sure what his topic was supposed to be; he seemed a little random, but he was entertaining nonetheless. I asked him what he thought about paying a tax to the monarchy and he kind of half answered it and the topic changed to the idea that the Royal Family had Princess Diana killed. A lady next to us told us that the Royal Family were "parasites". He asked us where we were from, we told him "the States." He then said that American girls loved English accents and that Becky would be fantasizing about him later tonight. I told him that it didn't matter who she was fantasizing about, it would still be to my benefit. We then went to a pub, had dinner and went back to the Hostel...
